Our church hosted a movie night with our marriage couples ministry in December 2015. The movie that we watched was called War Room. Click here to view the movie trailer and description below:
“With great jobs, a beautiful daughter (Alena Pitts) and a dream house, the Jordans seem to have it all. Appearances can be deceiving, however, as husband Tony (T.C. Stallings) flirts with temptation and wife Elizabeth (Priscilla Shirer) becomes increasingly bitter, crumbling under the strain of a failing marriage. Their lives take an unexpected turn for the better when Elizabeth meets her newest client, Miss Clara (Karen Abercrombie), who encourages the couple to find happiness through prayer.” ~War Room
The best part about Elizabeth meeting Miss Clara (her elder) was the reintroduction of the “prayer closet” as an answer to common problems this couple experienced. When Elizabeth discovered that she alone couldn’t resolve issues in her marriage, she took direction from Miss Clara and created a private, special closet to talk with God.
There’s nothing new about having problems in marriage or in life. I will be married 23 years on July 31st. I’m no different from other marriages, but the answer to marital problems should always be revealed through a one on one relationship with God. Because God always answers prayer!
This world is also going through traumatic times that affect our marriages. Our families are breaking up. We are losing jobs and homes. We are taking God out of everything. We are abusing and killing one another. We don’t have a prayer life anymore. We are walking away from our faith.
How do we change from our wicked ways? How do we get back to a “prayer closet” way of life? How can Christians stay close to God?
- Create a private place to speak with God.
- Ask God to clean our heart so we can forgive those who hurt us
- Pray that God put people in our lives so we can help them move forward
- Pray that God take people out of our life who are toxic
- Pray for our marriage, children and family
- Pray for this world as a whole
You can always add-on to your prayer closet as needed. There are many things we can go to God for in prayer. God tells us to always pray without ceasing.
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
It’s easy to get caught up with daily living and go all day and night without talking with your creator. But God wants to know how your day went, how you are doing and how you feel. Yes, He knows – but wants to hear directly from you – his child!
Don’t just pray to God when you need something or having a bad time in your marriage. Unfortunately, most of us don’t get on our knees until something bad happens and we need God to fix things, like Elizabeth. God wants us to include Him everyday – all day. As we know and have heard, prayer changes things. I also believe that prayer changes people and people change things!
Prayer for Marriages
Father God,
I come to you on behalf of all marriages that you have ordained
Lord I don’t know what’s going on and why there is so much division between us
But Lord you know all and can heal and repair all
Open our wives and husbands eyes and hearts to reveal you Lord
Let us all know that we are your children first and we are created in your image
Let us love one another as you love us
Let us remember that we are in this together, as one and not apart
Let us think about the other before we think of ourselves, as not to become selfish beings
Help us to come to you first in all we do, say and decide
Be with us and stand by us – Always
In Jesus Name We Pray
Amen
Wanda
