We are an emotional people. We can be up one minute and down another. Happy than sad. Upbeat then tired. Motivated then depressed. Secure then unsecure. Our feelings can determine how much trust we have in God.
Our culture teaches us to trust in our feelings above all. But unfortunately, they are quite unreliable and unpredictable. We wouldn’t accomplish most things in life if we depended on our feelings alone.
For example, I wouldn’t be writing this post (or anything for that matter) if I let my feelings take over. My feelings of insecurity says that “no one will read this post, relate or care about it.” But I’ve chosen to override them mostly, because my goal and purpose is to help someone else who may read, relate and care about this post.
Trusting our feelings over trusting God is what Satan strives for. Most times he wins. Here’s how to trust God, not your feelings…
Why you shouldn’t trust your feelings
As stated, our feelings can change with the wind because we are unreliable. But God is the same yesterday, today and forever. His word never changes. If He promises you something, you can take it to the bank!
Our feelings are based on what’s going on around us like a yo-yo. If we wake up “on the wrong side of the bed” it can affect our day negatively. If someone looks or says something wrong, it can affect our day negatively. If we don’t get support from our friends, family or even our church, it can affect us. But if someone gives us a compliment, supports us in a positive way or says “I love you” – we’re on cloud nine. That’s an awesome feeling. 🙂
Emotional people allow their feelings to control everything they do and say. We all know those people. You might even be one. I know I was. They resort to their feelings – good or bad – rather than trusting God.
Humans are born evil. We know that sin entered the world through Adam and Eve, so our hearts are sinful by nature. I say this not to depress you, but to state the facts as God sees it. Do you allow your feelings to run your life?
How to trust God
Trusting in God over our feelings begins with faith. When we choose to believe and accept Jesus into our heart, the first thing He asks is to have faith. Having faith in God means his will over ours. It’s not about us, but about Gods love. We must read, believe and apply his word in our lives to gain the trust that we need.
The fundamental fact of existence is that this trust in God, this faith, is the firm foundation under everything that makes life worth living. It’s our handle on what we can’t see. The act of faith is what distinguished our ancestors, set them above the crowd. Hebrews 11:1-2
When we ask Jesus to come into our heart, we are not our own. His spirit and power dwells inside of us and we start living for him. I didn’t say it was easy, but God says all things are possible through him (Matthew 19:26).
And because we belong to Christ Jesus, we have killed our selfish feelings and desires. Galatians 5:24
I know it’s hard to ignore our feelings. I do believe we have them for a reason. But I also believe that they shouldn’t override right from wrong or what God commands in his word. We must always seek righteousness above all.
But even if we don’t feel at ease, God is greater than our feelings, and he knows everything. 1 John 3:20
Amen.
God loves you and so do I,
Wanda
