When Someone You Love Walks Away from God

My heart broke a little the day I realized it.

The conversations had slowly changed. The church attendance stopped. The faith that once felt so solid started slipping through my fingers like sand — except it wasn’t my faith. It was someone I loved deeply. And there was nothing I could do to stop it.

Maybe you know that feeling when someone you love walks away from God.

Maybe it’s your child who grew up in the church and now wants nothing to do with it. Your spouse who used to pray with you but now rolls their eyes when you mention God. Your best friend who once led worship and now says she’s not sure she believes anymore. Your sibling who walked away and hasn’t looked back.

And you’re left standing there — loving them, hurting for them, praying for them — and wondering what you did wrong. Wondering if you should say something. Wondering if God is even listening anymore.

Here’s the first thing I want you to hear:

You didn’t fail them.

I know that’s where your mind goes. You replay every conversation, every moment, every time you could have said something different or been a better example or prayed more consistently. You carry the weight of their choices like they were yours to carry.

But they’re not.

God gave every single person — including the one you love — the freedom to choose. That’s not a design flaw. That’s love. Real love doesn’t force. It doesn’t manipulate. It doesn’t control. It invites. And sometimes the person being invited says not right now. Or no. Or I don’t believe this anymore.

And God lets them. Not because He doesn’t care. But because He loves them too much to force what has to be freely given.

I think about the prodigal son’s father a lot when I’m praying for someone who has walked away.

The father in that story did something that seems almost impossible when someone we love is making choices that break our heart.

He let him go.

He didn’t chase him down the road. He didn’t send messengers. He didn’t cut off his inheritance to force him home sooner. He stood at the door and he watched his son walk away — and then he waited.

And while he waited — he watched. Every single day. Looking down that road. Hoping. Praying. Believing that his son would come back even when there was no evidence that he would.

And when that son was still a long way off — the father ran.

That father is God. And He is watching the road for your person right now with the same desperate, patient, relentless love.

You are not watching alone.

So what do you do in the waiting?

Because the waiting is the hardest part. Especially when the person you love seems happy without God. Especially when they’re not in a ditch — they’re doing fine, actually, and that somehow makes it harder. Especially when every family dinner becomes a minefield and every conversation feels like it could go sideways.

Here’s what I’ve learned:

Pray more than you speak. Your words — no matter how true, how loving, how carefully chosen — will almost never be the thing that brings them back. But your prayers move mountains. Pray specifically. Pray consistently. Pray boldly. And then trust God to do what only God can do.

Love them without an agenda. The moment they feel like your relationship is a project — like every coffee date is really just an opportunity to witness to them — they will pull back. Love them because they are yours to love. Not because you’re trying to win them back to church.

Take care of your own faith. It’s easy to let someone else’s spiritual drought become yours. Guard your heart. Stay in the Word. Keep showing up. Your faith is not just for you — it’s a light they may need to find their way home someday.

Release the outcome. This is the hardest one. But their journey back to God is between them and God — not between them and you. You are not their savior. You are their person. And sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is simply stay.

I won’t promise you they’ll come back. I wish I could.

But I will tell you this — the God who made them loves them more than you do. More than you can fathom. And He has not given up on them. He is still working in ways you cannot see, in moments you are not present for, in the quiet of their own heart when no one else is around.

Your job is not to bring them back.

Your job is to love them, pray for them, and trust the One who is already running down the road toward them.

He hasn’t stopped watching that road for a single day.

And neither should you.
