It’s the question most Christians are too afraid to ask out loud.
Not because they don’t believe. Not because they’ve walked away. But because they’re sitting in church every Sunday, going through all the right motions, saying all the right things — and feeling absolutely nothing.
No presence. No peace. No sense that God is anywhere near.
And the silence is terrifying. Because if you can’t feel Him — does that mean He’s gone?
If that’s the question sitting in your chest right now — I want to talk to you today. Because I think this might be one of the most common and most misunderstood experiences in the Christian life.
And nobody is talking about it.

The Difference Between Feeling God and God Being There
Let me start with the most important thing I want you to hear:
Not feeling God is not the same as God not being there.
Read that again.
Your feelings are real. But they are not the final authority on God’s presence. Feelings are influenced by a thousand different things — your sleep, your stress, your season of life, your grief, your exhaustion, your hormones, the weather. Feelings go up and they go down. They come and they go.
God does not.
Deuteronomy 31:6 says — He will never leave you nor forsake you. Not when you feel Him. Not when you don’t. Not in the silence. Not in the static. Never.
That’s not a feeling. That’s a promise. And His promises don’t fluctuate with your emotions.
Why the Feeling Goes Away
There are several reasons the sense of God’s presence can go quiet — and none of them mean you’ve failed.
Spiritual exhaustion. If you’ve been pouring out for a long time — serving, giving, carrying, holding things together — your spiritual tank can run dry. Just like physical exhaustion makes everything feel harder, spiritual exhaustion makes God feel further. You haven’t moved. You’re just depleted.
Grief and trauma. Loss changes everything — including how we experience God. Some of the most faithful people I’ve ever known went through seasons after a significant loss where God felt completely absent. That’s not a lack of faith. That’s grief. And God is patient with grieving people.
Unaddressed distance. Sometimes the feeling fades because we’ve let busyness, distraction or unconfessed sin create distance in the relationship. Not because God withdrew — but because we slowly stopped showing up. The good news is that distance is always closeable. All it takes is turning around.
A season of testing. Sometimes — and this is the hardest one to accept — God allows the feeling to go quiet on purpose. Not to punish you. Not because He’s forgotten you. But because He’s developing something in you that can only grow in the dark. Faith that only exists when it feels good isn’t really faith. Sometimes the feeling goes away so the foundation can be tested and strengthened.
What Job Learned in the Silence
Job is one of my favorite people in the Bible to turn to when God feels absent.
Here was a man who loved God genuinely. And everything was stripped away. His family. His health. His wealth. Everything that made life feel meaningful — gone.
And for most of the book of Job — God is silent.
Job cries out. Job questions. Job demands answers. And for chapter after chapter — nothing. Just silence.
And then God speaks. Not to explain Himself. Not to answer Job’s questions. But to remind Job of something essential:
I am God. I was here the whole time.
The silence was never absence. It was presence that Job couldn’t feel in that season.
And when God finally spoke — Job’s response was remarkable. He said — My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you. Job 42:5
The season of silence produced a depth of knowing God that the easy seasons never could have. Job didn’t just know about God anymore. He knew Him.
That’s what the silent seasons are for.
What To Do When You Can’t Feel Him
I’m not going to tell you to just pray more or read your Bible harder. If you’re in a season where God feels absent those instructions can feel like rubbing two sticks together and wondering why there’s no fire.
Instead — here are a few honest things that have helped me in my own silent seasons:
Tell Him exactly how you feel. God already knows. But saying it out loud — I can’t feel you and it scares me — keeps you in the conversation. It keeps the relationship open even when it feels one-sided. And one-sided conversations with God are still conversations with God.
Stand on what you know, not what you feel. You may not be able to feel His presence right now. But you know things. You know He has shown up before. You know He has been faithful in ways you can look back and see clearly. Stand on what you know until the feeling catches up.
Stay in the small habits. Don’t wait until you feel spiritual to do the spiritual things. Open your Bible even if the words sit flat on the page. Pray even if it feels like talking to the ceiling. Show up even when showing up feels like nothing. Small faithful acts in a silent season are still faithful acts. And they add up.
Let someone carry you for a while. There’s a story in Exodus where Moses’ arms got tired holding up his staff during battle. And his friends Aaron and Hur held his arms up for him until the battle was won. Sometimes in the silent seasons we need people to hold up our faith for us. Let them. That’s what community is for.
The Feeling Will Come Back
I want to close with something I know from the other side of my own silent seasons:
The feeling always comes back.
Not always on your timeline. Not always in the way you expected. But it comes back. Because God has not moved. And when you stay — when you keep showing up even in the silence — eventually the static clears. The signal strengthens. And you realize He was there the whole time.
You didn’t lose Him.
You just couldn’t feel Him for a while.
And there is a difference. The most important difference in the world.
He will never leave you nor forsake you. — Deuteronomy 31:6
That is not a feeling. That is a fact. And facts outlast feelings every single time.
