If you’ve ever sat down to read your Bible and felt overwhelmed, distracted, or even bored—you’re not alone. In fact, many Christians struggle with consistency in reading God’s Word. The good news? You’re not a “bad Christian” if this happens to you. You’re human. And the beautiful thing is that God meets us in our weakness and gently calls us back to Him.
So why does Bible reading feel hard sometimes? And what can we do about it? Let’s walk through this together.

1. The Bible Feels Overwhelming
Encouragement: The Bible is a big, sacred book—and that in itself can make us feel small or unqualified to understand it. But remember this: God didn’t give His Word only to pastors, scholars, or theologians. He gave it to you. Every verse of Scripture is meant to point you closer to Him. Even if you don’t understand everything right away, the Holy Spirit is your guide.
What to do: You don’t have to “get it all” in one sitting. Start small. Choose a single book, like John or Psalms, and read slowly. God cares more about your heart being open than about you racing through pages.
2. Life is Busy and Distracting
Encouragement: God knows the demands on your life. He sees your full schedule, your endless to-do list, and the responsibilities pulling at you. He isn’t disappointed in you—He longs to meet you in the middle of it all. Even five minutes with Him is valuable. Remember, it’s about relationship, not perfection.
What to do: Pair Bible reading with something you already do. For example, read a short passage while having morning coffee, or listen to an audio Bible during your commute.
3. We Expect Instant Inspiration
Encouragement: It’s easy to think every Bible reading should give us a “mountaintop moment.” But faith is often built in the valleys, through ordinary, quiet faithfulness. God works in subtle ways—sometimes through a single phrase that sticks with you, or a verse that comes to mind days later. Trust that He is shaping you even when it doesn’t feel exciting.
What to do: Some days will feel powerful, others will feel ordinary. But like eating healthy meals, daily Scripture reading nourishes your soul over time—even when you don’t feel it right away.
4. We Don’t Have a Plan
Encouragement: Imagine walking into a library without knowing what you’re looking for—you’d probably feel lost! The same happens when we open the Bible without direction. That doesn’t mean you’re unspiritual—it just means you need guidance. God delights in order and clarity, and He knows you’ll grow best with a little structure.
What to do: Use a simple plan to guide you day by day. A plan removes the guesswork and helps you stay focused on Scripture instead of stressing about where to begin.
5. We Forget It’s About Relationship, Not Obligation
Encouragement: At some point, many of us fall into the trap of treating Bible reading like another task on the list. But God never meant His Word to weigh you down. Instead, it’s His way of speaking life, encouragement, and direction to your soul. Every time you open Scripture, imagine sitting across the table from Jesus. He loves spending that time with you.
What to do: Read not because you “have to,” but because you “get to.” Every page is an invitation to know Jesus more deeply.
