
Have you ever felt like your prayers are bouncing off the ceiling? Like you’re going through the motions of faith, but your heart just isn’t in it anymore?
Maybe you open your Bible and the words feel flat. You sit down for quiet time, but your mind wanders to your to-do list. You see other Christians posting about their “amazing God moments,” and you wonder what’s wrong with you.
If this sounds familiar, take a deep breath. You’re not broken. You’re not doing faith wrong. And you’re definitely not alone.
Spiritual dryness is something every believer experiences at some point. Even the most devoted followers of Jesus walk through seasons where God feels distant and faith feels hard.
Today, I want to share what I’ve learned about overcoming spiritual dryness—not through guilt or trying harder, but through grace and gentle steps back toward Jesus.
What Is Spiritual Dryness?
Spiritual dryness is that feeling of disconnect from God. It’s when:
- Prayer feels like a chore instead of a conversation
- Reading your Bible doesn’t bring the joy or insight it once did
- Worship songs don’t move you like they used to
- You feel like you’re going through the motions
- God seems silent or far away
Here’s what’s important to understand: Spiritual dryness doesn’t mean God has left you. It doesn’t mean your faith isn’t real. And it doesn’t mean you’ve done something wrong.
Sometimes dryness is simply a season—one that can actually deepen your faith if you know how to walk through it.
Why Do We Experience Spiritual Dryness?
There are several reasons you might be feeling spiritually dry:
7 Biblical Ways to Overcome Spiritual Dryness

1. Be Honest with God About How You Feel
Don’t pretend everything is fine when it’s not. God already knows your heart—He can handle your honesty.
Look at the Psalms. David was brutally honest with God:
“Why, Lord, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?” – Psalm 10:1
God doesn’t want your performance. He wants your heart, even when your heart is struggling.
Try this: Write out a raw, honest prayer. Tell God exactly how you’re feeling—the doubt, the frustration, the emptiness. Don’t hold back.
2. Return to the Basics
When faith feels complicated, go back to simple.
- Read one verse and sit with it
- Pray one honest sentence
- Listen to one worship song
- Take a walk and talk to God
You don’t need an hour-long quiet time to connect with Jesus. Sometimes the most powerful moments happen in the smallest, simplest acts of showing up.
Try this: Start with just 5 minutes. Open your Bible to Psalm 23 or John 15. Read it slowly. Ask God to speak to you through it.
3. Remember God’s Past Faithfulness
When you can’t sense God’s presence now, remember the times you did.
“I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago.” – Psalm 77:11
Journal about times God showed up for you. Revisit old prayer journals. Talk to a friend about how you’ve seen God work in your life.
Remembering builds faith for the present moment.
Try this: Write down 3 times God answered prayer or showed His faithfulness in your life. Let those memories remind you that He hasn’t changed.
4. Check Your Spiritual Diet
What are you feeding your soul?
If you’re constantly consuming negative news, scrolling social media endlessly, or filling your mind with entertainment that doesn’t honor God, it’s going to affect your spiritual health.
“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” – Philippians 4:8
Try this: Do a 7-day media fast. Replace scrolling time with worship music, encouraging podcasts, or Christian books.
5. Serve Someone Else
Sometimes the best way out of spiritual dryness is to stop focusing on yourself and start loving others.
When you serve someone in Jesus’s name—make a meal, send an encouraging text, volunteer, pray for a friend—you’re practicing faith even when you don’t feel it.
And often, in the act of loving others, you rediscover Jesus.
Try this: This week, do one intentional act of kindness or service. Watch how God meets you in that moment.
6. Rest in God’s Presence Without Expecting Anything
Not every moment with God needs to be productive or feel profound.
Sometimes you just need to sit with Him. No agenda. No expectations. Just being.
“Be still, and know that I am God.” – Psalm 46:10
God’s love for you doesn’t depend on how spiritually “on fire” you feel. You are His beloved child in the dry seasons and the vibrant ones.
Try this: Sit in silence for 10 minutes. Don’t try to pray or read or feel anything. Just rest in the truth that God is with you, whether you sense it or not.
7. Seek Community and Support
Don’t walk through this alone.
Talk to a trusted Christian friend, pastor, or mentor. Share what you’re experiencing. Let them pray for you and encourage you.
“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” – Galatians 6:2
Sometimes we need someone else to hold up our faith when ours feels weak.
Try this: Reach out to one person this week and be honest about your spiritual struggle. Ask them to pray for you.
What God Wants You to Know in the Dry Season
Here’s the truth that changed everything for me:
God is still with you, even when you can’t feel Him.
His love for you doesn’t fluctuate based on your spiritual temperature. His presence doesn’t depend on your ability to sense it. His faithfulness isn’t determined by your feelings.
On your driest day, you are still His beloved child. On your most spiritually disconnected moment, He is still holding you close.
Spiritual dryness is not rejection. Often, it’s an invitation—to deeper trust, to faith that doesn’t depend on feelings, to discovering that God is faithful even in the silence.

If you’re in a season of spiritual dryness right now, I want you to know: this isn’t the end of your story. God is doing something in this season, even if you can’t see it yet.
Start with one small step today:
- Pray one honest prayer
- Read one verse slowly
- Reach out to one friend
- Take one deep breath and remember: God is with you
- You don’t have to fix everything today. Just take the next small step toward Jesus.
